There is something quietly heavy about Kartavya. It is not the kind of thriller that tries to shock you every few minutes. Instead, the film slowly pulls you into a world of corruption, silence, fear, and emotionally exhausted people trying to survive within broken systems.
Saif Ali Khan delivers one of his most controlled performances in recent years. His character feels tired even before the investigation truly begins, and that emotional exhaustion reflects in every scene. There are moments where a simple expression from Saif says more than pages of dialogue could. He never tries to appear heroic, and that restraint makes the performance feel painfully real.

What truly works in Kartavya is the atmosphere. The empty roads, dusty locations, tense conversations, and constant feeling of uneasiness create a mood that quietly stays under your skin. The film avoids glamorising violence or trauma, which makes several scenes feel disturbingly authentic. At times, you almost feel emotionally drained watching these characters carry so much silence and pain.
At the same time, the film can feel frustrating because the potential for something unforgettable is clearly visible. The screenplay loses sharpness in parts, especially in the second half. A few twists become easy to predict, and the climax lacks the emotional explosion the story keeps building towards. You keep waiting for one scene that completely shakes you, but it never fully arrives.
Yet even after its flaws, the film stayed with me more than many technically better thrillers do. Maybe because beneath all the crime and investigation, Kartavya feels deeply human. It is less interested in shocking the audience and more interested in showing what constant violence, silence, and systemic failure do to people emotionally.
Should You Watch Kartavya?
If you expect a fast-paced thriller filled with constant twists and action, Kartavya may feel too slow for you. However, if you enjoy atmospheric crime dramas that focus more on mood, realism, and emotional damage, this film still has moments that work. The performances and grounded tone hold your attention, but the uneven screenplay and underwhelming payoff stop it from becoming memorable. You can skip it unless you are a fan of slow-burn crime dramas or want to watch Saif Ali Khan’s restrained performance.
