Friendship, desperation and crime collide in Chaar Yaar, an eight-episode Hindi crime drama streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Set in 2001 Mumbai, the series follows four middle-class friends whose attempt to escape financial troubles pulls them into the underworld. Each episode runs for approximately 41 minutes, blending crime, action and humour.
Jay Gala (Prayrak Mehta), Tony Gomes (Saqib Ayub), Saahil Shaikh (Purav Jha) and Sameer Khilji (Naman Jain) find themselves in trouble when Jay’s father’s deteriorating health forces them to seek a ₹20 lakh loan from gangster Imtiaz (Sikandar Kher). Things worsen when Saahil loses ₹10 lakh betting on an India-Australia cricket match.
Desperate to recover the money, the friends turn to car theft, eventually building their own criminal operation. Their growing involvement in Mumbai’s gang wars and a high-stakes drug rivalry puts them in danger, while Inspector Sumati Bhalerao (Sai Tamhankar) pursues the gang. Mehta brings a measured presence to Jay, Ayub adds energy to Tony, Jha plays the impulsive Saahil, and Jain provides comic relief as Sameer.
The screenplay by Sambit Mishra and Saurabh Sawant struggles with too many subplots and underdeveloped characters. The initial episodes take time to build momentum, while repeated confrontations weaken the suspense.
Vinay Waikul captures the atmosphere of early-2000s Mumbai, and the car chases offer occasional excitement. However, the uneven pacing and insufficiently developed antagonists prevent the crime drama from reaching its potential. The lead cast shares decent chemistry, but stronger character development could have made their friendship more compelling.
Should You Watch Chaar Yaar?
Chaar Yaar has an engaging premise and moments of humour, action and camaraderie, but its stretched screenplay holds it back. Fans of crime dramas may find it watchable, though those seeking a tightly plotted thriller might be disappointed.
